Daya General Hospital in Thrissur Secures Coveted JCI Accreditation
In a landmark achievement for healthcare in central Kerala, Daya General Hospital has been awarded the prestigious Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. This recognition is widely regarded as one of the highest honors in international healthcare quality and patient safety standards. With this milestone, Daya becomes the first hospital in Thrissur to receive JCI accreditation, joining an elite group of hospitals across India that meet stringent international benchmarks comparable to American healthcare systems.
Rigorous Evaluation and Global Recognition
The JCI 'Gold Seal of Approval' is a globally recognized symbol of excellence, reflecting an organization's unwavering commitment to delivering safe, effective, and high-quality patient care. A comprehensive assessment was conducted from January 13 to 16, 2026, by a team of JCI experts who meticulously evaluated the hospital's compliance with international standards. The evaluation covered critical areas, including International Patient Safety Goals, patient assessment and care, anesthesia and surgical services, medication management, infection prevention and control, quality improvement systems, governance and leadership, facility management and safety, staff qualifications and education, and information management systems.
Leadership Perspectives on the Achievement
Speaking on this significant accomplishment, Dr. V.K. Abdul Azeez, Managing Director of Daya General Hospital, expressed immense pride. "Receiving JCI accreditation is a proud moment not just for Daya, but for Thrissur and Kerala as a whole. This recognition reflects our unwavering commitment to patient safety, ethical clinical practices, and continuous quality improvement. Our vision has always been to provide world-class healthcare locally, and this milestone reaffirms that commitment," he stated.
Dr. Fazil Abubakar CP, Medical Director, added, "JCI accreditation is the result of years of structured systems, clinical excellence, and team dedication. Every department worked with precision to meet global benchmarks. This achievement assures our patients that they are receiving care that adheres to internationally validated standards of safety and quality."
Expansion Plans and Funding Boost
Building on this milestone, Daya General Hospital has secured Rs 150 crore in institutional equity funding in 2025 from Ascent Capital. This investment is part of a broader Rs 500+ crore expansion roadmap planned over the next five years, signaling strong investor confidence in the hospital's clinical standards and growth vision. The newly raised capital will enable Daya to triple its bed capacity from 500 to 1,500 beds in a phased manner, significantly enhancing patient accommodation across general, specialty, and super-specialty services.
Key expansion highlights include:
- Development of a dedicated Oncology Super Specialty Centre in Thrissur, operational by 2026, integrating medical, surgical, and radiation oncology services.
- Establishment of a specialized Mother & Child Centre to strengthen maternal and neonatal care.
- Upgrading the flagship Thrissur unit into a quaternary care centre for advanced interventions and transplant programs.
- Opening two new hospitals in neighbouring districts to improve accessibility in tier-two and tier-three regions.
Impact on Employment and Healthcare Ecosystem
Currently operating four healthcare units across Thrissur, Kunnamkulam, Palakkad, and Valapad, Daya employs around 1,500 medical and non-medical professionals. With the expansion plan, the organization anticipates generating over 3,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, contributing significantly to Kerala's healthcare workforce. This move aims to reduce the need for patients to travel to metropolitan cities for complex procedures, thereby improving continuity of care within the state.
National and International Accreditations Portfolio
Daya General Hospital has previously secured several national recognitions, including the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH), National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), NABH Nursing Excellence, CAHO CSSD Excellence, and iCOMPLY certifications. With the addition of JCI accreditation, Daya stands out as one of the few hospitals in Kerala to hold an extensive portfolio of both national and international accreditations, reinforcing its commitment to uncompromised quality and patient safety.
Healthcare experts note that JCI accreditation involves one of the most rigorous evaluation frameworks globally, focusing not only on infrastructure but also on patient-centered processes, risk management, clinical governance, and continuous performance improvement. This achievement firmly positions Thrissur on the global healthcare map, showcasing Daya's dedication to ethical medical practices and affordable treatment while expanding its presence across Kerala.
