Complex Lung Surgery Saves 25-Year-Old Man in Raipur

The department of heart, chest, and vascular surgery at the state-run Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital in Raipur has successfully saved the life of a 25-year-old man through a complex surgical procedure. The patient, a resident of Chataud near Abhanpur, had been suffering from a severe medical condition characterized by coughing up blood for the past decade. This condition, medically termed hemoptysis, had significantly worsened over the last month, posing an imminent threat to his life.

Critical Condition and Diagnosis

Doctors reported that the patient was losing between 50 ml and 70 ml of blood with each coughing episode. Without immediate medical intervention, this condition could have been fatal. Comprehensive investigations, including a CT scan, revealed a large cavity in the lower lobe of the right lung, which was infected with a fungal infection known as aspergilloma. This infection is commonly observed in patients who have a history of tuberculosis.

High-Risk Surgical Intervention

Dr Krishna Kant Sahu, head of the department, led the medical team that performed a lobectomy—a surgical procedure to remove the infected portion of the lung. The surgery is considered high-risk due to the potential for damaging major blood vessels such as the pulmonary artery and pulmonary vein. To minimize complications, the team employed an advanced lung stapler gun technique, which helped reduce issues like air leaks.

The patient responded well to the surgery and recovered quickly. He has since been discharged from the hospital and is expected to resume normal activities soon. The entire treatment was provided free of cost under the Ayushman Yojana, a government health insurance scheme aimed at providing affordable healthcare to vulnerable populations.

Recognition and Commitment

Dr Vivek Choudhary, dean of Pt Nehru Memorial Medical College, praised the coordinated efforts of the medical team for their successful management of this complex case. Dr Santosh Sonkar, medical superintendent of the hospital, added that the institution remains dedicated to delivering high-quality healthcare to needy patients through the Ayushman scheme, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder access to life-saving treatments.
