The Chandigarh administration has officially approved the establishment of a regional medical hub, a move that is expected to significantly enhance healthcare services in the region. The project, which has been in the planning stages for several months, received the final nod during a high-level meeting chaired by the Chandigarh Administrator.
Key Features of the Medical Hub
The proposed medical hub will be developed on a sprawling 50-acre plot in the southern sector of the city. It will house a multi-specialty hospital with a capacity of 500 beds, along with specialized research centers for cardiology, neurology, and oncology. Additionally, the hub will include a medical college and a nursing school to address the shortage of healthcare professionals.
Boosting Medical Tourism
Officials believe that the hub will position Chandigarh as a prime destination for medical tourism. The facility will offer advanced treatments at competitive rates, attracting patients from neighboring states and countries. The administration has also planned to integrate telemedicine services to reach remote areas.
The project is estimated to cost around INR 1,200 crore and will be executed in phases. The first phase, expected to be completed within three years, will focus on the hospital and emergency services. Subsequent phases will include research labs and academic blocks.
Community Impact
Local residents have welcomed the decision, as it promises to create thousands of jobs and improve access to quality healthcare. The administration has assured that the hub will prioritize affordable care for underprivileged sections of society. Environmental impact assessments have been conducted to ensure sustainable development.
The approval marks a significant milestone for Chandigarh's healthcare landscape, with the hub set to become a model for public-private partnerships in the region.
