Ahmedabad Teen with Autism Inspires Community on Awareness Day
In Ahmedabad, Samarth, a 17-year-old with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), exemplifies confidence and active participation in games and activities at the BM Institute of Mental Health. His journey, marked by understanding and resilience, began when his parents, Sanket Christian and his wife, noticed Samarth missing developmental milestones. It took consultations with three doctors to diagnose his condition as ASD.
Early Intervention and Awareness
Sanket Christian shared his experience on Thursday, coinciding with International Autism Awareness Day. He emphasized the importance of not ignoring signs and striving for early intervention. "We often overlook the signs and desire our children to be 'normal,' but awareness has significantly improved. My plea to everyone is to ensure the earliest possible intervention for better outcomes for children," Christian stated. Today, Samarth has cultivated strong interests in drawing and singing, showcasing his personal growth.
Celebrating Achievements and Talent
This year's theme, 'Autism and Humanity — Every Life Has Value,' resonated across Ahmedabad as various organizations hosted awareness events involving students and parents. At the Blind People's Association (BPA), the focus was on celebrating 15-year-old Ali Masood Raza, who recently secured two gold medals in mini javelin and softball throw at the National Athletic Championship for Autism held in Patna. He had previously won a bronze in the 2024 edition.
Moving Beyond Awareness
BPA officials highlighted the critical need to identify and nurture the talents of children with ASD. Rajul Mallik, director of the BM Institute of Mental Health, stressed, "The need of the hour is to move beyond mere awareness and create platforms that recognize and celebrate the abilities of children with ASD. We also actively reach out to parent groups to facilitate early identification and intervention."
The events in Ahmedabad underscored a collective effort to foster inclusivity and support for individuals with autism, promoting a message of hope and empowerment through real-life success stories like those of Samarth and Ali.
