In a significant development for healthcare infrastructure in Northeast India, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the state-of-the-art Mother and Child Hospital within the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) campus in Guwahati on Sunday. This major expansion is designed to strengthen maternal and neonatal services across Assam, addressing critical healthcare needs.
Modern Healthcare Facility with Specialized Services
The newly inaugurated hospital boasts modern infrastructure and specialized care services, including dedicated maternity and neonatal care units. A key highlight is the 152-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which is equipped to handle critical cases. With a total capacity of 832 beds, this facility represents a substantial enhancement to GMCH's capabilities.
Foundation Stone Laid for New GMCH Building
During the event, Chief Minister Sarma also laid the foundation stone for a new GMCH building, valued at Rs 3,300 crore. This project is part of a comprehensive overhaul of the medical college, which was established in 1960. The expansion aims to add new facilities and extend healthcare reach, positioning GMCH as one of the largest and most advanced medical colleges in the country.
Historic Milestone in Assam's Healthcare Sector
Taking to social media platform X, Sarma described the day as a historic moment for Assam. He emphasized that the Mother and Child Hospital, which sees the highest number of patients and attendants at GMCH, will play a pivotal role in reducing the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) and infant mortality rate (IMR). Sarma expressed confidence that the new facility will be comparable to premier medical institutions in India, offering excellent care for mothers and children.
