In Lucknow, Apollo Hospitals Managing Director Suneeta Reddy acknowledged on Saturday that Uttar Pradesh's healthcare landscape has undergone a visible transformation over recent years, stating that "intent has turned into impact." She was in the city to meet Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, discussing her group's ongoing projects and reviewing progress at the Lucknow center.
Political Will Driving Healthcare Change
Reddy recalled her first meeting with Adityanath in 2018 when Apollo was investing in its Lucknow hospital, sensing a strong political will to drive transformation. "From then to now, I can clearly see that transformation happening," she told TOI in an exclusive interaction. She emphasized that the chief minister doesn't just exude vision but ensures execution, noting greater budget allocations, investments in infrastructure, and a focus on people.
Expansion Plans Across Uttar Pradesh
Stating that UP is central to Apollo's expansion strategy, Reddy revealed plans to double capacity in Lucknow. The group's 400-bed hospital in Varanasi is in advanced stages, while Kanpur is being evaluated as a potential next destination. Apollo also has a presence in Noida, strengthening its footprint across the state.
Medical Tourism Potential with Noida Airport
With the upcoming Noida International Airport, Reddy highlighted UP's potential to become a top center for medical value travel. "With better connectivity, upcoming infrastructure such as Noida airport and expanding hospital networks, UP also has the potential to emerge as a stronger destination for advanced care and medical value travel," she said.
Affordability and Insurance Role
Addressing affordability concerns, Reddy noted that insurance will play a bigger role as healthcare costs rise and out-of-pocket spending declines. Stakeholders must work extensively to create more affordable packages. On Ayushman Bharat, she called it a great scheme but said package rates often don't reflect actual treatment costs, suggesting "scientific costing" based on procedure inputs and location-linked costs.
Future Healthcare Networks and Technology
Reddy outlined UP's healthcare future, emphasizing networks linking big hospitals with local providers to bring care closer, enable early detection, and ease pressure on tertiary centers. She concluded that technology and artificial intelligence could significantly aid disease prevention, enhancing overall healthcare delivery in the state.
