The Chandrashila trek in Uttarakhand is a dream destination for trekkers and adventure enthusiasts. However, those planning a trip may need to reconsider as local authorities and priests have temporarily closed the trek due to adverse weather conditions. Access to parts of the route near Tungnath and Chandrashila has been restricted following a series of dangerous weather events, including lightning strikes and heavy rainfall. Here is what travelers should know.
Appeal by Local Priests
A video shared on Instagram shows a large crowd of devotees queuing, while a priest with a microphone announces: "Because the weather is going to worsen, do not plan to go to Chandrashila. Offer your prayers from here and head back down. The Chandrashila trek has been closed. Take care of your safety and remain in lower altitudes. Several incidents have occurred due to lightning strikes in the upper regions, so please do not proceed to Chandrashila." This appeal comes from priests of Tungnath Dham, urging pilgrims and tourists to avoid the trek due to ongoing bad weather. Several lightning strikes have been reported in recent days.
Popularity of Chandrashila Summit
The Chandrashila summit, at an elevation of about 12,110 feet, is among Uttarakhand's most popular short Himalayan treks. It offers stunning views of peaks like Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, Trishul, and Kedar Dome. The route attracts thousands of trekkers annually, especially during summer. However, sudden weather changes have turned fatal in recent weeks.
Tragic Lightning Incident
The closure follows a tragic lightning strike on May 30 on the Chandrashila-Tungnath route, where two brothers from Lucknow lost their lives. They were trekking near Tungnath, home to the world's highest Shiva temple. Earlier, on May 15, two tourists were injured by lightning near Chandrashila Peak.
Weather Alerts and Precautionary Measures
The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for parts of Rudraprayag district, warning of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. The Kedarnath Yatra has also been halted as a precaution. Weather-related disruptions are becoming common in Uttarakhand's trekking destinations. Trekking organizations advise visitors to monitor forecasts closely, as mountain weather can change dramatically within hours.
Recommendations for Travelers
Authorities recommend postponing summit attempts until weather normalizes. Travelers are advised to carry rain gear and check local forecasts before planning a trip.
