UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Directs Establishment of Major Trauma Centre Near Agra-Lucknow Expressway

In a significant move to enhance emergency medical services, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued directives for the establishment of a 250-bed Level-1 trauma centre under the UP University of Medical Sciences (UPUMS) in Saifai, Etawah district. The primary objective is to provide faster and more efficient emergency care for road accident victims and other critical cases across the region.

Strategic Location to Reduce Critical Treatment Delays

Chairing the second meeting of the university's board of governors on Tuesday in his capacity as chancellor, CM Yogi emphasized that the proposed trauma centre should be strategically located near the Agra-Lucknow expressway, approximately 10 kilometres from the main UPUMS campus. He highlighted that the current distance from accident-prone expressway areas to existing medical facilities often leads to a loss of crucial golden hour treatment time for victims.

The new facility, to be operated directly by UPUMS, is designed to bridge this gap by providing prompt, high-quality medical intervention at the site of need. This initiative is expected to significantly improve survival rates and recovery outcomes for trauma patients in western and central Uttar Pradesh.

Comprehensive Focus on Rural Healthcare Expansion

Beyond the trauma centre, Chief Minister Adityanath has instructed UPUMS to establish a dedicated Centre for Rural Health and prepare a detailed action plan for its implementation. This ambitious rural healthcare initiative is projected to include:

  • Tele-OPD and virtual OPD services for remote consultations
  • Digital data integration systems for seamless patient record management
  • Mobile medical outreach units to serve underserved and remote communities

These measures aim to dramatically improve access to medical consultation, follow-up care, and preventive health services in rural areas that have traditionally faced healthcare accessibility challenges.

Transforming UPUMS into a Premier Healthcare and Education Hub

The board meeting also focused on broader institutional development, with decisions aimed at expanding health services, strengthening superspecialty facilities, and giving new direction to medical education and research at UPUMS. CM Yogi articulated a vision to develop the university into an effective hub for high-quality healthcare, education, and research specifically serving western and central Uttar Pradesh.

"There must be emphasis on quality, sensitivity, and timeliness in treatment, teaching, and research activities," stated the Chief Minister during the meeting. He further emphasized that public expectations from the institution are substantial and called for effective implementation of a hub-and-spoke model to improve both the reach and quality of medical services across the region.

Incorporating Innovation and Integrative Medicine Approaches

Highlighting the importance of innovation in healthcare delivery, CM Yogi directed university officials to study and incorporate best practices from leading medical and academic institutions across India into UPUMS systems. This forward-looking approach is intended to keep the institution at the forefront of medical advancements and service delivery models.

In a notable decision, the board agreed to establish an integrative medicine unit at UPUMS that will provide patient-centric care by integrating allopathic medicine with Ayush systems. Developed in coordination with the Ayush department, this initiative will feature:

  1. An integrative outpatient department (OPD)
  2. Specialty clinics combining traditional and modern approaches
  3. Dedicated yoga and wellness units for holistic patient care

Strengthening Public Outreach and Health Communication

To enhance community engagement and health awareness, Chief Minister Adityanath directed the university to build more effective communication channels with society. As part of this directive, UPUMS will establish a community broadcast service designed to disseminate:

  • Health awareness messages and disease prevention information
  • Verified details about government health schemes and benefits
  • Educational content on various health and wellness topics

This comprehensive approach to public outreach aims to bridge information gaps and empower communities with knowledge that can improve health outcomes across the region.
