Komal Jamwar's Battle with Guillain-Barré Syndrome: A Story of Survival Against All Odds
At just 33 years old, Komal Jamwar's life took a dramatic turn when she woke up one morning to discover her left leg had become weak and drooping. Initially dismissing it as a consequence of her sleeping posture, both her husband and mother-in-law massaged her feet, hoping the issue would resolve itself. Despite their efforts, Komal proceeded with her daily tasks, unaware of the serious medical condition that was beginning to unfold.
The Rapid Progression of Symptoms and Initial Medical Consultation
By afternoon, the weakness intensified, prompting concern within the family. Komal visited a doctor with her husband, who after a brief examination, prescribed medications and reassured her it was likely just a normal cramp. That evening, attending a family function seemed like a distraction, but upon returning late and going to sleep, Komal faced a terrifying reality the next morning.
Both her legs had completely stopped functioning, causing her to fall as she attempted to get out of bed. Frightened and in tears, she was rushed by her family to a hospital in Jammu, where she was admitted for five days. Despite extensive tests, doctors struggled to identify the cause of her sudden paralysis until the sixth day, when they diagnosed her with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS).
Understanding Guillain-Barré Syndrome and the Treatment Challenges
Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare but severe autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves. It often follows respiratory or gastrointestinal infections and typically begins with tingling or weakness in the legs, which can quickly escalate to paralysis. Fortunately, timely treatment can lead to a good prognosis, but the costs presented a significant hurdle for Komal's family.
"The doctors informed us that a single injection would cost approximately ₹1 lakh, with multiple doses required over several days," Komal recalled. Her family later discovered the medication was available in the market for around ₹15,000–₹16,000 and managed to arrange the injections. However, instead of improvement, Komal's condition deteriorated rapidly.
A Critical Turn: Declared Dead and Miraculous Revival
"I began experiencing heaviness in my chest and difficulty breathing," Komal explained. The following day, doctors declared her dead and instructed her husband to take her home. Refusing to accept this outcome, her husband, an electrician at the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine board with no medical training, began performing CPR on her.
He continued resuscitation efforts for nearly 35 minutes or longer, until Komal slowly started responding and her breathing resumed. With the local hospital lacking a ventilator, she was urgently transferred to a facility in Ludhiana, where she was placed on a ventilator and treated with antibiotics. Gradually, her chest cleared, and signs of improvement emerged.
Medical Oversight and the Road to Recovery
During her treatment in Ludhiana, doctors revealed a critical error: the injections intended to be administered over 5-6 days had been given within 24 hours, exacerbating her condition. Despite this setback, Komal remained paralyzed, unable to even lift a finger, and was bedridden for eight to nine months.
Her recovery was a testament to unwavering family support. "When I was hospitalized, my husband and parents cared for me tirelessly. After returning home, my mother-in-law and sister-in-law provided exceptional care," she shared. Hiring a physiotherapist who worked diligently through painful sessions, coupled with the motivation from her young children, fueled her determination to walk again.
The Long Journey Back to Mobility and Normalcy
"It took four to five years before I could walk with the aid of a walker," Komal noted. Today, she walks independently, though not completely stable, with her gait still showing signs of her ordeal. Reflecting on her experience, she emphasized the power of belief and familial love.
"I always believed I would survive to care for my children, and my husband's refusal to give up on me was crucial. When you deeply desire something, you find the strength to achieve it," Komal stated. "There were moments of weakness, but the overwhelming support from my family left me no choice but to overcome this challenge."
Now healthy and living a normal life with her family, Komal Jamwar's story serves as a powerful reminder of how hope, faith, and perseverance can triumph over even the most dire circumstances. Declared dead at one point, her survival was made possible by her husband's determination and her own resilient spirit, proving that faith can indeed move mountains.
