A 28-year-old woman died hours after giving birth to a baby boy via a C-section at a Community Health Centre (CHC) in Chauri Chaura, Gorakhpur, on Sunday. The incident sparked a six-hour protest by her family, who alleged medical negligence and a lack of timely treatment.
Details of the Incident
The deceased, Neelam Nishad, a resident of Belwa Dubauli village in Deoria, was admitted to the CHC on Saturday after experiencing labor pain. She subsequently delivered a boy following a C-section procedure.
According to her husband, Dev Nishad, and brother, Ritesh, Neelam's condition deteriorated after the surgery. They alleged that doctors were unavailable at the hospital during the night and that delays in treatment contributed to her death.
Family Protests
Enraged by the incident, family members placed the body outside the CHC and staged a protest, demanding action against the medical staff. The demonstration continued for nearly six hours and prompted senior police officials, including the circle officer, to arrive at the spot.
Police later detained a nurse who had been on duty during the night for questioning. The agitation ended around 11 am after officials assured the family of a fair investigation, following which the body was sent for a postmortem examination.
Hospital Response
CHC superintendent Sarvjeet Prasad claimed that the woman died of cardiac arrest, rejecting allegations of medical negligence. However, the family remains unconvinced and has demanded a thorough inquiry into the matter.
This incident has raised concerns about the quality of healthcare in rural areas, where timely medical intervention is often lacking. Authorities have promised a fair investigation, and further action will be taken based on the postmortem report and other findings.
