Woman dies, 16 injured in ICU fire at Dehradun hospital

A tragic incident at a private hospital in Dehradun has raised serious concerns over fire safety standards. On Wednesday morning, an air-conditioning unit in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) short-circuited, leading to a massive fire. A 66-year-old woman, Virvati, who was on ventilator support, died due to asphyxiation from smoke inhalation. Sixteen others, including three police personnel, sustained injuries, with ten of them in critical condition.

Details of the Incident

The fire broke out around 9:20 am at Panacea Hospital in Dehradun's Nehru Colony area near Rispana Bridge on Haridwar bypass road. According to eyewitnesses, thick smoke engulfed the ICU within minutes. Hospital staff quickly shut down major appliances and switches, but the fire spread rapidly, possibly fueled by high-intensity oxygen lines.

The victim's son stated that his mother was diabetic and had been admitted on Monday. He arrived at the hospital to find she had passed away. Officials noted that although she was evacuated, she inhaled a significant amount of smoke, leading to her death.

Response and Investigation

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Manoj Sharma confirmed that the body has been sent for postmortem to determine the exact cause of death. At the time of the incident, 14 patients were admitted, including six in the ICU. One patient was referred to Coronation District Hospital, while others were shifted to another private hospital. Ten people, including two police personnel, remain in critical condition.

Hospital owner Ranveer Chauhan reported that the fire was so intense that it depleted the entire 6,000-litre firefighting water tanker on the premises. The fire department has completed its inspections. Inspector General Rajeev Swarup stated that an audit is underway and that a short circuit is suspected. The district administration has directed concerned departments to assess the damage and conduct a thorough inquiry.

Broader Implications

This incident highlights the critical need for stringent fire safety measures in healthcare facilities. The presence of oxygen lines and other medical equipment can exacerbate fire risks. Authorities are now focusing on preventing such tragedies in the future through better infrastructure and regular safety audits.
