Watermelon Safe Despite Bhendi Bazaar Deaths, Say Doctors

Even as watermelons disappeared from parts of Bhendi Bazaar on Monday afternoon following the news of a family's deaths, doctors have clarified that the fruit is safe for consumption. Watermelon, a summer favorite, is considered a hydrating fruit as it consists of over 90% water.

Dr. Akash Shukla, head of the gastroenterology department at KEM Hospital, Parel, was categorical that a watermelon, even if stale, is unlikely to cause fatalities. While there have been rare instances in medical history of 'bitter-tasting cucumbers' causing deaths, he said there is no cause for panic over watermelons.

The incident had led to a temporary drop in watermelon sales in the area, but medical experts urge the public not to avoid the fruit unnecessarily. Watermelon remains a healthy and hydrating option, especially during the summer months.
