Varanasi: In response to rising temperatures, District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar on Saturday issued a set of instructions to relevant departments on how to protect oneself from severe heat, hot winds, and heatwave, and how to stay safe during these conditions.
Current Temperature and Forecast
According to the India Meteorological Department, the city recorded a temperature of 41.3 degrees Celsius on Saturday. The heat is expected to persist from Sunday through the coming week, with moisture levels in the atmosphere continuing to decrease. On Saturday morning, the effect of hot winds was felt from early morning itself.
DM's Advisory for Residents
The District Magistrate advised people to cover windows with reflectors such as aluminium foil or cardboard to prevent outside heat from entering. He also urged residents to listen to local weather forecasts and remain alert to upcoming temperature changes.
First Aid and Vehicle Safety: The DM appealed to the public to get trained in first aid to deal with emergencies. He emphasized never leaving children or pets alone in a closed vehicle, as temperatures can rise rapidly inside.
Stay Indoors and Avoid Sunlight: Residents were advised to stay indoors as much as possible and avoid direct sunlight. To minimize exposure, people should stay on the lower floors of the house as much as possible.
Diet and Hydration Tips
Eating balanced, light, and regular meals is recommended. People should never consume stale food and should avoid alcoholic beverages. When going outside, it is essential to cover the body and head with cloth or a hat.
Health Risks and Vulnerable Groups
During summer, body fluids begin to dry up, increasing the risk of heatstroke when the body is deficient in water and salt. Individuals with alcohol addiction, heart disease, chronic illness, obesity, Parkinson's disease, advanced age, and uncontrolled diabetes need special protection from heatwave. Additionally, those using diuretics, antihistamines, and psychiatric medications should also remain cautious about heatwave.
