Vadodara's SSG Hospital Blood Centre Achieves Historic Milestones in Lifesaving Services

The state-run SSG Hospital in Vadodara has announced that its blood centre has reached all-time highs in both blood collection and distribution, representing a significant expansion of its critical healthcare services over the past four years. This remarkable achievement underscores the facility's growing role in addressing the region's medical needs.

Unprecedented Growth in Blood Distribution for Critical Patient Groups

Government data reveals that between 2022 and 2025, the centre not only managed to meet escalating demand from patients with chronic blood disorders but also established new benchmarks across multiple service categories. A particularly notable development is the sharp 70% increase in blood supply for pregnant women and newborns under the Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK) program, marking the highest growth rate in recent years and substantially strengthening maternal and neonatal care infrastructure.

Support for sickle cell anemia patients witnessed an extraordinary surge during this period. The number of blood units issued more than tripled, skyrocketing from just 518 units in 2022 to a record-breaking 1,672 units in 2025. Meanwhile, children with thalassemia, who require lifelong blood transfusions for survival, received 1,086 units in 2025 alone, representing the highest annual allocation in the centre's history.

Expansion of Advanced Therapeutic Capabilities

The blood centre has significantly broadened its advanced treatment offerings by scaling up therapeutic apheresis services. These sophisticated procedures now include red cell exchange, plasma exchange, leukapheresis, granulocytapheresis, plateletpheresis, and peripheral blood stem cell collection. Medical professionals are increasingly utilizing these techniques to manage complex and critical conditions such as sickle cell disease, Guillain-Barre syndrome, myasthenia gravis, leukemia, and various autoimmune disorders.

Record-Breaking Blood Collection Achievements

"Parallelly, blood collection has touched a new peak," confirmed Dr. Ranjan Aiyer, medical superintendent of SSG Hospital. "The centre collected 16,422 units in 2025, up substantially from 12,687 units in 2022—the highest volume ever recorded in our facility's history."

This impressive collection achievement was supported by 177 organized donation camps and the participation of over 9,400 voluntary donors throughout the year. Hospital officials attribute the consistent upward trend across all performance parameters to growing public trust in the institution's services as well as the blood centre's substantially enhanced operational capacity and infrastructure.

The comprehensive data demonstrates how SSG Hospital's blood centre has transformed into a regional healthcare hub, successfully addressing both routine and specialized blood-related medical requirements while setting new standards for public health service delivery in Gujarat.
