Uttarakhand Health Department Activates 17-Bed Hospital at Kedarnath for Char Dham Yatra
In a significant move to bolster medical preparedness, the Uttarakhand health department is poised to operationalize a fully-equipped 17-bed hospital at Kedarnath ahead of the Char Dham Yatra, which commences on April 22. Officials confirmed on Tuesday that the facility is nearly 90% complete, with essential medical equipment already installed and ready for deployment.
Comprehensive Medical Infrastructure for Pilgrim Safety
Director General of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Sunita Tamta, emphasized that the hospital will become fully functional once the yatra begins. "The infrastructure is in place, and we are ensuring seamless operations to handle any medical emergencies during the pilgrimage," she stated. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to address health risks associated with the high-altitude trek to the four sacred shrines.
The health department will deploy approximately 400 medical graduates across the yatra route, covering the districts of Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi, and Chamoli. These professionals will be stationed at key points leading to the shrines of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri, all situated at elevations exceeding 10,000 feet.
Specialist Deployment and Emergency Response Systems
To further enhance medical support, 229 specialist doctors from the state health department, government medical colleges, and private institutions will be assigned on a rotational basis every fortnight. Officials noted that any remaining gaps in coverage will be addressed by seeking additional resources from the Ministry of Health.
Medical experts have identified cardiopulmonary ailments as the primary cause of fatalities during the yatra, particularly affecting elderly pilgrims and individuals with pre-existing conditions. Last year, health-related issues led to approximately 159 deaths, with cardiac arrest and complications from high-altitude conditions being the major contributors. Data from previous years indicates that Kedarnath reports the highest number of casualties, followed by Yamunotri.
Advanced Ambulance Network and Health Monitoring
Health Minister Dhan Singh Rawat announced the deployment of 177 ambulances, including road, air, and water units, to ensure rapid emergency response. "We are establishing 25 medical relief posts and 33 health screening points along the route, supported by swasthya mitras (health volunteers)," he explained. This multi-faceted approach aims to mitigate risks posed by the challenging terrain and unpredictable weather, which are especially hazardous for pilgrims with diabetes and hypertension.
Pilgrims are strongly advised to register on the e-Swasthya Dham portal for access to health-related information, protocols, and real-time updates. This digital platform is designed to facilitate better health management and emergency coordination throughout the yatra period.
