Uttar Pradesh FSDA Halts Operations at 11 Charitable Blood Centers in Major Cities
In a decisive move to address growing public health concerns, the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) of Uttar Pradesh has suspended all blood-related activities at 11 charitable blood centers across Lucknow and Kanpur. This action follows a comprehensive statewide inspection drive that uncovered significant procedural and operational violations at these facilities.
Statewide Inspection Drive Uncovers Serious Irregularities
The FSDA initiated this extensive inspection campaign in response to directives from the state government, aiming to ensure the safe and high-quality availability of blood and blood components to citizens. This initiative comes at a critical time when changing weather conditions and the spread of communicable diseases typically increase demand for blood transfusions.
Officials revealed that inter-district teams of drug inspectors were specially constituted by the department headquarters to conduct surprise inspections of blood centers operated by charitable trusts and societies across various districts. The inspection teams focused on evaluating documentation practices, blood handling procedures, storage conditions, and overall operational standards.
Detailed Inspection Results Reveal Widespread Violations
As part of this rigorous drive, inspections were conducted at 25 blood centers in Lucknow and 13 in Kanpur. Among these, 11 centers were found to have serious deficiencies that compromised blood safety standards.
The authorities immediately ordered a complete halt to all blood collection, storage, and distribution activities at these non-compliant facilities. The suspended centers include:
- Lucknow (7 centers): Nobel Charitable Blood Centre, Sri Sai Blood Bank & Component Center, Awadh Charitable Blood Bank, Little Star Charitable Blood Centre, KHS Charitable Blood Centre, Bombay Charitable Blood Centre, and Lucknow Charitable Blood and Component Centre.
- Kanpur (4 centers): Vaada Charitable Blood Centre, Mayanjali Charitable Blood Bank, Pushpanjali Charitable Blood & Component Centre, and Swastik Charitable Blood Centre.
Additional Centers Receive Show-Cause Notices
Beyond the suspensions, the FSDA has issued show-cause notices to other blood centers where minor deficiencies were observed during the inspections. Local drug inspectors have been directed to ensure these facilities implement corrective measures within stipulated timelines and demonstrate full compliance with established safety protocols.
Emphasis on Public Health Protection
FSDA officials emphasized that this regulatory action is fundamentally aimed at safeguarding public health and preventing the serious risks associated with unsafe blood transfusion practices. The timing is particularly significant as seasonal illnesses often lead to increased demand for blood products, making quality control even more crucial.
The department has reiterated its commitment to maintaining strict monitoring of all blood banking services across Uttar Pradesh. Officials warned that any violation of established norms will attract stringent punitive action to ensure consistent quality standards in this critical healthcare sector.
This comprehensive inspection drive represents a proactive approach to public health management, demonstrating the state government's determination to address potential safety gaps in medical services before they can cause harm to citizens.
