According to police sources, the victims have been identified as Pranjali Dora, an 11-year-old student of Class VI and daughter of Deenabandhu Dora, and Manini Dora, a 12-year-old student of Class VII and daughter of S. Prakash Dora. Both girls were residents of the area and attended local schools.

The incident unfolded in the afternoon after the girls returned from school. They went to the village pond for bathing, a common activity in the rural setting. However, tragedy struck when they got into difficulty in the water.
Other individuals who were bathing in the pond at the time attempted to rescue the duo but were unsuccessful. They immediately alerted the girls' family members and contacted the nearby fire station at Digapahandi for assistance.
