The Karnataka health department has confirmed that the recent deaths of nearly 44 peacocks in Tumakuru district were caused by the H5N1 strain of avian influenza. The announcement came on May 2, 2026, following laboratory tests on samples collected from the affected areas.
Incident Details
Between mid-April, peacocks were found dead in several villages including Kolihalli, Bairasandra, Hullenahalli, Timmegoudanpalya, and surrounding regions. Local authorities were alerted after residents reported unusual numbers of bird deaths. The health department promptly dispatched teams to collect samples and conduct preliminary investigations.
Confirmation of H5N1
After tests at the Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals, the presence of the H5N1 virus was confirmed. This strain is highly pathogenic and can spread rapidly among birds, posing risks to poultry and potentially humans through close contact.
Response Measures
In response, the state government has implemented surveillance and biosecurity measures in the affected zones. Culling of domestic poultry in the vicinity has been initiated to prevent further spread. The health department has also issued advisories to local residents to avoid handling dead or sick birds and to report any unusual bird deaths immediately.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have set up control rooms to coordinate containment efforts. The public is urged to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols to minimize the risk of transmission.
