Tragic Drowning Claims Three Lives in Kozhikode's Puliyavu River
A heartbreaking incident unfolded on Saturday afternoon in Kozhikode district, where three members of a single family lost their lives to drowning in the Puliyavu river near Nadapuram. The victims have been identified as Areekundil Ansar, aged 43, his wife Sauda, 39, and their eight-year-old niece, Isa Mariyam.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The tragedy occurred around 3:40 PM on Saturday near the Thazhakkuni bridge along the Puliyavu river stretch. According to preliminary reports, the family had visited the riverbank for routine washing activities. While Isa Mariyam was bathing in the water, she was suddenly swept away by a powerful deep current in the Mayyazhi river section.
In a desperate attempt to save the young girl, both Ansar and his wife Sauda jumped into the water. Tragically, all three individuals were overwhelmed by the strong currents and drowned before help could arrive.
Rescue Efforts and Aftermath
Other children present at the scene immediately alerted nearby residents, who rushed to the location and initiated search operations. After considerable effort, local residents managed to retrieve all three bodies from the river.
Medical Response: The victims were transported to Nadapuram taluk hospital, where medical professionals declared them deceased upon arrival. Following necessary inquest procedures at the taluk hospital, the bodies were transferred to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital for postmortem examinations.
Family Background and Survivors
Areekundil Ansar leaves behind his elderly parents, Ahmed and Amina, as well as his daughter, Afna Fathima. The family, residing in the Nadapuram area, has been plunged into profound grief by this sudden and devastating loss.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the hidden dangers present in natural water bodies, particularly during monsoon seasons when currents can become unexpectedly strong and treacherous.
