Tragic Drowning of Two Sisters During Family Pilgrimage in Tamil Nadu
In a heartbreaking incident, two young sisters from Kerala drowned in the Thamirabarani river on Friday evening while their family was on a pilgrimage to Tiruchendur in Tamil Nadu. The victims have been identified as Meenakshi, aged 12, and Abinaya, aged 16, daughters of Shankar and Lakshmi, who are grocery merchants based in Nedumkandam and originally from Theni.

The family was traveling from Theni to Tiruchendur when they made a stop at the Arunachaleswarar Temple located in Eral, Thoothukudi district. During this break, the children decided to bathe in the nearby Thamirabarani river. Tragically, they slipped and were swept away by the strong currents, leading to their drowning.
Immediate Response and Recovery Efforts
Upon being alerted by local residents, police and fire and rescue personnel swiftly rushed to the scene and initiated an intensive search operation. After extensive efforts, the bodies of both sisters were recovered from the river. The authorities later conducted an autopsy and handed over the remains to the grieving relatives.
