Sambalpur Septic Tank Tragedy Claims Two Lives, Leaves One Critical
In a devastating incident in Sambalpur district, two individuals lost their lives and one remains in critical condition after allegedly suffocating inside a newly-constructed septic tank. The tragedy unfolded on Tuesday morning in Keseibahal village, located within the Kuchinda block, sending shockwaves through the local community.
Details of the Fatal Incident
According to SDPO Pradeep Dash, the accident occurred around 8:30 am during work to remove the centering of the septic tank, which had been built by Hemant Behera. Two workers, identified as Sushil Naik (35) and Anand Majhi (35), entered the tank to perform the task. When they failed to emerge after an extended period, Hemant Behera went inside to check on them.
Witnessing this, Hemant's father, Bhikari Charan Behera (55), also entered the tank. Tragically, due to a severe lack of oxygen inside the confined space, Sushil Naik and Bhikari Charan Behera collapsed from suffocation. Hemant Behera also fell unconscious, while Anand Majhi managed to survive the harrowing ordeal.
Rescue Efforts and Hospitalization
Family members immediately alerted locals, who in turn informed the police and fire services. Rescue teams, utilizing a JCB machine, removed the concrete slab of the septic tank to conduct the operation. All four individuals were pulled out and rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Doctors declared Sushil Naik and Bhikari Charan Behera dead upon arrival. Hemant Behera is currently undergoing treatment in critical condition, while Anand Majhi is reported to be in stable condition. The bodies of the deceased have been sent to Kuchinda hospital for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Administrative Response and Protests
Collector (Sambalpur) Siddheshwar Baliram Bondar stated that the Kuchinda sub-collector has been directed to visit the site and submit a detailed report on the incident. He also assured that financial assistance would be provided to the families of the deceased to help them cope with the loss.
In response to the tragedy, BJD workers staged a protest in front of the hospital, demanding adequate compensation for the victims' families. Party leader Rajendra Chhatria urged the administration to ensure proper support for those affected by this heartbreaking event.
This incident highlights critical safety concerns in construction and maintenance work, particularly in confined spaces like septic tanks, where oxygen depletion can lead to fatal outcomes.
