Record 44.4°C Heatwave Scorches Chandigarh, Hottest Since 2012

Chandigarh experienced its hottest day since 2012, barring the year 2024, as the mercury soared to a scorching 44.4 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. The city was gripped by severe heatwave conditions, prompting authorities to issue a red alert for the region.

Temperature Soars to Record High

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded a maximum temperature of 44.4°C in Chandigarh, which is 7.3 degrees above normal. This is the highest temperature recorded in the city since 2012, excluding the year 2024 when temperatures were even higher. The previous record for this year was 44.2°C on June 10, 2023.

Heatwave Conditions Worsen

The severe heatwave has gripped the city, with temperatures remaining above 40°C for the past several days. The IMD has issued a red alert for Chandigarh and surrounding areas, warning of extreme heat conditions that could lead to heat-related illnesses. Residents have been advised to stay indoors during peak hours, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous activities.

Impact on Daily Life

The intense heat has disrupted daily life in Chandigarh. Schools and colleges have been closed, and outdoor activities have been curtailed. The demand for electricity has surged as people rely on air conditioners and coolers to beat the heat. Water supply has also been affected in some parts of the city due to increased consumption.

Health Advisory Issued

Health officials have issued advisories urging people to take precautions against heatstroke and dehydration. Symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, and headaches should not be ignored, and immediate medical attention is advised if they occur. The elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable.

The IMD has forecast that the heatwave conditions are likely to persist for the next few days, with temperatures expected to remain above 43°C. A slight relief is expected after June 20, when a western disturbance is likely to bring some cloud cover and possibly light rain.

Chandigarh, known for its pleasant climate, has been experiencing increasingly hotter summers in recent years, attributed to climate change and urbanization. The city's administration is working on measures to mitigate the impact of heatwaves, including setting up cooling centers and distributing water at public places.
