Three Women Hospitalized After Accidentally Consuming Rat Poison-Laced Chutney in Chennai
In a shocking incident in Chennai, three young women were rushed to the hospital after they accidentally consumed chutney made from a coconut that had been laced with rat poison. The event occurred in a rented house on Vivekananda Street in the Virugambakkam area, where the victims were residing with four other women. Fortunately, their condition is reported to be stable following immediate medical attention.

The affected individuals include Nikita, 20, from Trichy, and Madhumitha, 21, from Mayiladuthurai, both of whom are trainees at a software company. Additionally, Savitha, 21, from Puducherry, a third-year B Tech student at a private engineering college in Vadapalani, was also impacted. All seven women shared the accommodation, leading to this unfortunate mishap.
How the Poisoning Occurred
The sequence of events began when the residents purchased rat poison to address a rodent infestation in their home. However, they had not yet decided on when to use it. In the meantime, one of their friends, Saira, 21, applied the toxic paste onto a piece of coconut and placed it aside on a slab without informing the others. Tragically, another resident unknowingly used this contaminated coconut piece to prepare chutney for breakfast.
After consuming the chutney, Nikita, Madhumitha, and Savitha started experiencing severe symptoms, including dizziness and stomach aches. It was only when Saira noticed that the poisoned coconut piece was missing that she realized what had happened, confirming her suspicions of food poisoning.
Medical Response and Police Investigation
The three women were initially shifted to the government hospital in KK Nagar, where they received first aid. They were subsequently transferred to the government Royapettah hospital for further treatment to ensure their full recovery. Authorities have stated that their condition remains stable under medical supervision.
