Ranchi Hospitals Grapple with Rising Tide of Respiratory Illnesses
Outpatient departments across government and private hospitals in Ranchi are experiencing a notable surge in cases of cold, cough, sore throat, and allergies. Medical authorities have directly linked this increase to the prevailing weather patterns characterized by cool, breezy mornings and evenings alongside significant temperature fluctuations.
Government Hospitals See Major Influx
At the prominent Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, the situation is particularly pronounced. Hospital sources indicate that daily OPD cases related to these respiratory and allergic complaints have risen to between 30 and 40. Doctors report that approximately 50% of all daily OPD cases currently involve cold, cough, and allergy symptoms.
Dr. Gagan Gunjan, Associate Professor in the Department of General Medicine at RIMS, confirmed the trend. "Nearly half of the OPD cases we are seeing daily are related to cold, cough, and allergy symptoms, which are common during periods of fluctuating temperatures," he stated.
The Sadar Hospital in Ranchi is also reporting a steady stream of patients, with sources noting around 20 individuals registering daily with cold and cough-related complaints.
Private Healthcare Facilities Mirror the Trend
The rise is not confined to public institutions. Private hospitals are witnessing a parallel increase. At Bhagwan Mahavir Manipal Hospitals, daily cases have escalated dramatically. Where earlier figures ranged between one and five such cases per day, the hospital now registers between 10 and 15 patients daily with these ailments.
Dr. Nidhi Jha from the hospital provided further insight. "There has been a recent surge in patients affected by seasonal changes. Common symptoms include cough, expectoration, headache, and noticeable changes in laboratory parameters related to metabolic syndromes," she explained, highlighting the broader health impact of the weather shift.

Civil Surgeon Dr. Prabhat Kumar emphasized the widespread nature of the issue. "Patients belonging to various age groups are reporting to the OPD with complaints of cold, cough, sore throat, and allergies on a daily basis, mostly linked to the fluctuating weather conditions," he said, confirming the demographic breadth of the outbreak.
The personal impact on residents is stark. Bhawna Kumari, a resident of Doranda, shared her family's experience, illustrating how quickly these illnesses can spread. "The cough first affected my two-year-old daughter, and spread to all members of our family within a few days," she recounted, underscoring the contagious nature of the prevalent conditions.
Underlying Causes and Community Impact
Medical experts unanimously point to the current weather as the primary catalyst. The combination of cool breezes and unstable temperatures creates an environment conducive to the spread of viral infections and the exacerbation of allergic reactions. This seasonal vulnerability is leading to crowded OPDs and increased demand for medical attention across the city's healthcare infrastructure.
The situation calls for public awareness regarding preventive measures during such weather transitions, including appropriate clothing, hygiene practices, and timely medical consultation for persistent symptoms.
