Ranchi Hospitals Ramp Up Heatwave Preparedness as Temperatures Soar
Government hospitals in Ranchi are intensifying their readiness to address a potential increase in heatwave-related illnesses, with health authorities implementing comprehensive systems to manage the rising health risks. This proactive approach follows guidelines issued by the National Health Mission (NHM) to combat the effects of extreme heat.
Rims and Sadar Hospital Lead Preparedness Efforts
At the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims), medical superintendent Hirendra Birua emphasized that the hospital is adhering strictly to government directives. "We are following the govt guidelines. Cases of dehydration and heat exhaustion are being reported. As of now, the patient footfall is not very high, but we are preparing as temperatures are soaring," he stated. Birua warned that prolonged dehydration could lead to severe complications, particularly affecting kidney function. To mitigate this, Rims is stocking oral rehydration solution (ORS) and essential medicines, with plans to establish a separate ward for heat-related patients if cases escalate.
Similarly, Ranchi civil surgeon Prabhat Kumar highlighted that Sadar hospital has made arrangements to handle acute cases. "An isolation ward will be earmarked in the coming days to manage serious heatstroke cases. We are ensuring adequate stocks of ORS, IV fluids and essential medicines. Medical teams have also been sensitised to respond promptly and effectively to heat-related emergencies," Kumar explained. These measures aim to provide timely and effective care for those affected by the heatwave.
NHM Directives for Statewide Heatwave Management
The National Health Mission has issued comprehensive guidelines to all districts, mandating the strengthening of heatwave preparedness. Key directives include:
- Setting up dedicated heatstroke management units with adequate cooling arrangements.
- Ensuring uninterrupted availability of ORS, intravenous (IV) fluids, and essential medicines.
- Installing water coolers and fans in outpatient departments (OPDs) for patient comfort.
- Requiring all patients visiting OPDs to be screened for heatstroke-related illnesses.
NHM director Shashi Prakash Jha emphasized the importance of these measures, stating that they must be implemented across district hospitals and community health centers throughout the state. Additionally, NHM has activated a state-level heatwave helpline to assist citizens and coordinate emergency responses. Residents can seek guidance or report heat-related emergencies by calling the toll-free number 104, ensuring accessible support during this critical period.
As temperatures continue to rise, these initiatives underscore the commitment of Ranchi's healthcare system to safeguard public health and prevent heat-related complications through proactive planning and resource allocation.
