Punjab Government Accelerates Health Coverage with Massive Sehat Card Distribution

The Punjab government is significantly expanding healthcare access under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, with health minister Dr Balbir Singh announcing on Friday that authorities are now issuing an impressive 50,000 Sehat Cards every single day through extensive enrolment drives conducted across villages, towns, and cities throughout the state.

Universal Eligibility and Growing Awareness

Emphasizing the comprehensive reach of this vital health initiative, Dr Balbir Singh stated, "Everyone is eligible to enrol under the scheme. There is no barrier based on age, gender, or income level." He highlighted that with increasing public awareness, more families are proactively coming forward to secure this essential coverage, thereby safeguarding themselves against unexpected and potentially devastating medical expenses.

Substantial Impact and Financial Commitment

The minister provided concrete data on the scheme's substantial impact, revealing that it has already facilitated more than 2 lakh medical treatments. These include critical and life-saving procedures such as advanced cancer care, complex cardiac interventions, and necessary orthopaedic surgeries. "Over Rs 300 crore worth of treatment has been provided so far under the scheme," Dr Singh confirmed, underscoring its tangible benefits for Punjab residents.

To ensure the program's sustainability and continued expansion, the Punjab Budget for 2026-27 has allocated a substantial Rs 2,000 crore. This significant financial commitment is designed to strengthen the scheme's infrastructure and broaden its beneficiary base in the coming years.

Comprehensive Cashless Coverage and Accessible Enrolment

Under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, eligible families are entitled to cashless treatment of up to Rs 10 lakh annually. This coverage is applicable at both government hospitals and empanelled private healthcare facilities, ensuring that no patient is forced to delay or forgo necessary medical care due to financial constraints or the urgent need to arrange funds during emergencies.

To maximize outreach and guarantee ease of access, the Punjab government is organizing daily enrolment camps from 8 am to 4 pm at easily accessible community locations. These include gurdwaras, panchayat ghars, temples, and various community centres. These camps are specifically designed to simplify the registration process, particularly for individuals who might otherwise face challenges in accessing formal government centres independently.

Streamlined Registration Process

The government has outlined a straightforward six-step process for registration to ensure convenience for all applicants. Residents can directly visit a nearby Common Service Centre (CSC), a government enrolment camp, or a Seva Kendra without requiring any prior appointment. Applicants must carry essential documents, including:

  • Aadhaar Card
  • Voter ID
  • Birth certificates for minors

It is important to note that all family members covered under the scheme must be bona fide residents of Punjab, ensuring the benefits are directed to the state's populace. This systematic approach aims to bring comprehensive health security to every eligible household across Punjab.
