Prayagraj Hospital Introduces Dedicated Paediatric Blood Cancer Ward

Families in Prayagraj with children suffering from blood cancer can now breathe a sigh of relief, as they no longer need to undertake arduous journeys to metropolitan hubs like Delhi or Mumbai for advanced medical care. Kamla Nehru Hospital has officially inaugurated a specialised 12-bed facility named the Jawahar Ward, exclusively dedicated to paediatric blood cancer treatment. This initiative marks a significant milestone in enhancing healthcare accessibility for young patients in the region.

Advanced Treatment Under Expert Guidance

The treatment protocols at the newly established ward are being implemented under the expert supervision of Dr Manas Dubey, a renowned medical oncologist from Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai. Children diagnosed with blood cancer are receiving cutting-edge targeted therapy, which offers a more precise and effective approach to care. This advanced methodology not only improves recovery outcomes but also minimises side effects compared to traditional treatments.

Comprehensive Financial and Logistical Support

A cornerstone of this initiative is the robust financial assistance provided to patients. According to Hariom Singh, the Director (Administration) of Kamla Nehru Hospital, nearly 90% of the treatment expenses for affected children will be covered by the hospital in collaboration with various voluntary organisations. "Our primary objective is to ensure that no child is denied treatment due to financial limitations," Singh emphasised. To further alleviate the burden on families travelling from distant districts, the hospital has arranged:

  • Free accommodation facilities
  • Complimentary food services
  • Transport assistance

An NGO has also established lodging near Allahabad University to support attendants of paediatric patients throughout the treatment duration.

Expanding Cancer Care Infrastructure

Medical oncology, as highlighted by hospital officials, is a super-specialty branch that addresses a broad spectrum of cancers, including:

  1. Solid tumours such as lung, breast, and brain cancers
  2. Haematological malignancies like leukaemia, lymphoma, and myeloma

Currently, the department has registered 1,617 cancer cases, with the outpatient department (OPD) handling over 500 patients daily. Notably, children constitute approximately 15% to 20% of these cases. Doctors stress that early detection of blood cancer in children aged 5 to 15 years is crucial, as younger patients generally exhibit stronger recovery potential, leading to significantly improved treatment outcomes.

Enhancing Access for Rural Communities

To bridge the healthcare gap for rural patients, Kamla Nehru Memorial Hospital has initiated a dedicated cancer OPD in the industrial area of Naini. This facility operates under the leadership of cancer specialist Dr Shraddha Yadav, with patients being referred to the main hospital on Hashimpur Road for comprehensive investigations and further management.
