Prayagraj Heatwave: Temperatures Hit 44°C, Public Health at Risk

Prayagraj Endures Severe Heatwave as Temperatures Soar Above 44 Degrees Celsius

After recording the hottest day of the season at 44 degrees Celsius on Friday, Sangam City remained firmly in the grip of a relentless summer on Saturday. The maximum temperature dipped only slightly by 0.8 degrees, while the minimum temperature rose by more than 2 degrees, offering little respite to the beleaguered residents.

Intense Heat Persists with Minimal Fluctuation

The day remained intensely hot, with the mercury settling at 43.2°C. The minimum temperature of 24.6°C provided scant relief to those already enduring prolonged heatwave-like conditions. Friday marked the seasonal peak so far, with temperatures hitting 44°C and a low of 22.2°C.

This week has seen consistently high readings, with Thursday logging a maximum of 43.0°C and a minimum of 22.8°C, while Wednesday recorded 43°C with a low of 21.8°C. The unbroken spell of extreme heat has left the region scorched and its inhabitants exhausted.

Daily Life Disrupted by Sustained High Temperatures

With temperatures remaining above normal for several consecutive days, daily life in Prayagraj has been severely affected. Roads, markets, parks, and public spaces are witnessing a sharp decline in daytime activity as people avoid stepping out into the harsh sun.

The situation is further aggravated by dry weather conditions and low humidity levels, making the heat even more unbearable. On Saturday, relative humidity was recorded at 40% maximum and 17% minimum, significantly adding to the discomfort index.

Meteorological Concerns and Public Health Impact

Meteorological experts have expressed deep concern over such early and sustained high temperatures, noting that the mercury is expected to remain elevated for a couple more days. This prolonged exposure to extreme heat is taking a toll on public health.

Hospitals across the city, both government and private, are reporting a steady rise in heat-related illnesses such as dehydration, fever, and heat exhaustion. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable, with paediatric wards witnessing heavy patient inflow and some facilities operating at full capacity.

Relief Efforts and Seasonal Business Boom

Amid the harsh weather, seasonal businesses are experiencing a surge in demand. Cold drink stalls, ice-cream vendors, juice shops, and lassi outlets are witnessing brisk sales as residents desperately seek relief from the scorching heat.

Simultaneously, several social organizations, NGOs, and government institutions have stepped up their efforts to provide some relief. They are offering cool water to commuters and bus or train passengers to help quench their thirst during this challenging period.

The combination of extreme temperatures, low humidity, and prolonged exposure continues to pose significant challenges for the residents of Prayagraj, highlighting the urgent need for adaptive measures and public awareness to mitigate the effects of such intense heatwaves.
