NCST Notices Over Tribal Girl's Death in Odisha School

The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) has issued notices to the Mayurbhanj district collector, superintendent of police, and the ST & SC Development, Minorities & Backward Classes Welfare Department regarding a suspected food poisoning incident at a residential school. The incident, which occurred on April 14, resulted in the death of a Class V tribal girl and left hundreds of students ill.

Inquiry Initiated

The commission initiated an inquiry into the incident at Kakabandha Ashram School in Rasgovindpur block, Mayurbhanj district, following a complaint submitted by a delegation led by BJD spokesperson Priyabrata Majhi. The NCST will investigate the complaint filed on April 15, 2026, exercising its powers under Article 338(A) of the Constitution.

Deadline for Reports

The authorities have been directed to submit detailed reports on the incident, actions taken, and other relevant information within a week. The commission warned that failure to respond within the stipulated time may lead to the exercise of civil court powers, including the issuance of summons.

Details of the Incident

The students reportedly fell ill after consuming food prepared at the school, which included pakhala, aloo bharta, mango chutney, and leafy greens. Rupali Besra later died at Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital.

Government Response

Following the incident, the state government ordered an inquiry and suspended the headmaster. An RDC-level probe is currently underway.
