Aizawl: Mizoram continues to hold the first position in malaria prevalence in the entire country, based on the Annual Parasite Incidence (API), as World Malaria Day was observed in the state on Saturday.
The state programme officer-cum-additional director (malaria) under the state health services, Dr Lalzawmi, said Mizoram has maintained the highest position in malaria prevalence since 2024. Though malaria prevalence has gone down to around 45 percent this year as compared to 2024, the state continues to hold the distinction of the highest malaria prevalence in the country, Lalzawmi said.
Southern districts of Siaha, Lawngtlai and Lunglei, as well as the north-western Mamit district, continue to report the highest prevalence of malaria till today, she added.
World Malaria Day was observed across the state with various awareness programmes and health camps, aiming to educate the public on preventive measures and early treatment.
Health officials urged residents to use mosquito nets, eliminate stagnant water, and seek prompt medical attention for fever. The state government has intensified vector control activities in high-burden areas.
Mizoram's persistent high API underscores the need for sustained efforts in malaria elimination, especially in border districts with challenging terrain and cross-border movement.
