The Gujarat forest department has arrested a man for allegedly killing a lion cub near Junagadh district, officials confirmed on Friday. The accused, identified as Bavan Punabhai Chavda, was apprehended following a search operation spanning late Thursday night to early Friday morning.
Discovery of the Carcass
The carcass of a male lion cub, approximately eight months old, was found in the Rabari Nes area near Junagadh city under the Dungar (South) Range of the Junagadh Forest Division. Forest personnel immediately reached the spot upon receiving information and initiated an investigation following scientific and legal procedures.
Post-Mortem Findings
A post-mortem conducted at Sakkarbaug Zoological Park by a panel of three veterinary doctors confirmed the presence of severe physical injuries on the cub's body. According to Deputy Conservator of Forest Akshay Joshi, evidence collected from the crime scene and technical analysis led to the identification of the accused.
Arrest and Legal Action
Chavda initially absconded after the incident. However, acting on specific inputs, three teams from the Junagadh forest department conducted a search in Kutiyana taluka of Porbandar district and successfully captured him. Joshi stated that Chavda is being brought to Junagadh for further interrogation and legal proceedings.
Investigation and Charges
Important evidence has been collected from the crime scene and other related locations, with further investigation underway. A case has been registered under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. Officials added that the accused will be produced before a court after the completion of the investigation.
The incident highlights ongoing challenges in protecting Asiatic lions in Gujarat, a species listed as endangered. The forest department's swift action underscores its commitment to wildlife conservation.
