Malaria Outbreak Strikes CRPF CoBRA Jawans in Saranda Forest Amid Anti-Naxal Operations

Security personnel deployed in the interior areas of the Saranda forest in West Singhbhum district, Jharkhand, to neutralize Maoist threats are now battling a severe malaria outbreak. In a distressing development, nine CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) jawans from different battalions have been diagnosed with malaria over the past six days, highlighting the dire health challenges faced by forces in this dense, rain-fed region.

Casualties and Medical Emergencies

Among the affected, jawan Anand Singh (44) of the 197 Battalion tragically succumbed to the disease at a private hospital in Ranchi. In another critical incident, Anil Biswal, a jawan from the 205 Battalion, collapsed on an airstrip while suffering from high fever, chills, and vomiting. He was airlifted to the same hospital in Ranchi for urgent treatment. The collapse occurred during a media briefing by CRPF Special Director General Deepak Kumar, who was discussing anti-Naxal operations in the area, underscoring the immediate health crisis.

Saranda Forest: A Breeding Ground for Disease

The Saranda forest, spanning 805 square kilometers, is one of India's largest forests dominated by saal trees. Its rain-fed environment creates perfect breeding conditions for female anopheles mosquitoes, the primary vectors of malaria. This region, home to 56 villages, sees around 20 villages regularly reporting malaria cases. In 2024 alone, the district has recorded a staggering 9,000 malaria cases, indicating a persistent public health issue.

Official Response and Preventive Measures

West Singhbhum Superintendent of Police Amit Renu attributed the outbreak to poor living conditions in the hilly terrain of Saranda. In response, authorities have distributed anti-malaria kits among the jawans and augmented supplies of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, repellents, and anti-malaria pills in camps. Jawans have been advised to wear full-sleeved clothing to minimize mosquito bites. Additionally, each battalion is supported by a team of doctors and paramedical staff to provide medical care.

Historical Context of Malaria in the Region

This is not the first time malaria has impacted security forces in Saranda. In 2011, one CoBRA jawan died and 50 others were hospitalized due to the disease. The situation peaked in 2012, with 200 jawans diagnosed with malaria, marking the highest incidence in the district's history. These recurring outbreaks emphasize the ongoing struggle against vector-borne diseases in conflict zones.

The CRPF's efforts to combat Maoist insurgency are now compounded by this health emergency, calling for enhanced preventive strategies and medical support to safeguard personnel in one of India's most challenging operational environments.
