The ongoing heatwave in Maharashtra has taken a more severe turn, with several districts reporting significant temperature increases over the weekend. Authorities have issued urgent health advisories as temperatures soar well above historical averages for April, prompting concerns about public health and safety.
Hill Station Feels the Heat: Mahabaleshwar Records 34.7°C
In a notable deviation from its typically cool climate, the famous hill station of Mahabaleshwar in Satara district witnessed a maximum temperature of 34.7°C on Sunday. This marks a rise of 1 degree Celsius compared to Saturday's reading. More alarmingly, this temperature surpasses the long-term April mean for Mahabaleshwar, which stands at 36.8°C, indicating an unusual warming trend for the region.
Solapur and Sangli Experience Sharp Temperature Hikes
The heatwave's intensity is particularly evident in Solapur, which recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 41.6°C, up from 41.5°C the previous day. This figure exceeds Solapur's April mean temperature of 40.2°C, highlighting the severity of the current conditions.
Similarly, Sangli district reported a further increase in maximum temperature to 41°C, rising from 40.3°C. This reading is significantly higher than Sangli's long-range April mean maximum temperature of 38.4°C, underscoring the widespread nature of the heatwave.
Kolhapur Sees Moderate Rise Amid Health Concerns
Kolhapur experienced a half-point increase in its maximum temperature, reaching 39°C. This temperature is notably above the mean maximum temperature for Kolhapur in April, which is 36.8°C. The consistent upward trend across these districts has raised red flags among health officials.

In response to the escalating temperatures, district authorities across Maharashtra have advised residents to stay indoors during the peak afternoon hours. Local pediatricians have observed a concerning rise in cases of stomach upset and dehydration among children, directly linked to the intense heat. A Kolhapur-based pediatrician emphasized the importance of preventive measures, stating, "Parents should ensure the kids have electrolyte mixed water sipping from time to time. They should be fed with more fluids, fruits."
