Lucknow Zoo Deploys Comprehensive Summer Strategy to Safeguard Animals from Scorching Heat
In response to the severe hot conditions gripping the region, the Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden in Lucknow has implemented a series of proactive measures to protect its animal residents from heat stress and ensure their overall well-being. The zoo administration has rolled out an extensive summer management plan that includes both environmental modifications and dietary adjustments.
Environmental Cooling Systems Installed Across Enclosures
Sprinkler systems have been strategically set up in the enclosures housing deer, tigers, and giraffes. These systems allow the animals to soak in water periodically throughout the day, providing much-needed relief from the intense heat. Additionally, approximately 50 coolers have been installed in various animal enclosures to further lower ambient temperatures, as confirmed by zoo officials.
For avian species, special protective measures have been taken. Khas and bamboo mats have been installed in bird enclosures to create shaded areas that shield the birds from direct sunlight and extreme heat. Green curtains have also been erected in several sections of the zoo to provide natural cooling through evaporation and shade.
Enhanced Water Features and Dietary Modifications
The zoo has undertaken renovation work on ponds within enclosures, particularly those housing ducks and pelicans. These improved water bodies enable the birds to cool off and swim at regular intervals, helping them regulate their body temperature effectively during peak heat periods.
Zoo Director Sanjay Biswal explained that dietary changes form a crucial component of their summer management strategy. "The intake of carnivorous animals has been reduced by approximately 10% to prevent metabolic stress during extreme heat conditions," Biswal stated. "Conversely, herbivores are receiving increased quantities of juicy fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, melon, cucumber, and leafy greens. These foods help maintain natural hydration levels and provide essential nutrients during the challenging summer months."
Mineral Supplementation for Electrolyte Balance
To address the increased mineral requirements during hot weather, salt licks have been strategically placed across various animal enclosures. These salt licks provide essential minerals that help maintain proper electrolyte balance, which is particularly important for animals experiencing prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
The comprehensive approach taken by the Lucknow zoo demonstrates a commitment to animal welfare that goes beyond basic care requirements.
