Two Youths Killed in Lightning Strike Amid Unseasonal Weather in Marathwada
In a tragic incident, two young men lost their lives and their friend sustained grievous injuries after being struck by lightning near Nath Nagar in Jalna's Ambad taluka on Monday evening. The event occurred as unseasonal rainfall and hailstorms battered parts of the Marathwada region, leading to fresh agricultural losses and raising concerns among local communities.
Details of the Fatal Incident
According to Ambad tehsildar Vijay Chavan, the victims have been identified as Govind Pralhad Lahane, aged 21, and Aditya Dagadu Bedre, aged 20. Both died on the spot when lightning struck while they were taking shelter under a tree during a sudden downpour. A third friend, who was with them, suffered serious injuries and was promptly rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Chavan explained that the trio was caught unprepared by the abrupt weather change, highlighting the dangers of such extreme conditions.
Widespread Weather Impact and Crop Damage
The lightning strike is part of a broader pattern of severe weather affecting Marathwada. Several talukas in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, including Paithan, Sillod, Soygaon, Gangapur, and Phulambri, experienced continuous rainfall accompanied by hailstorms at multiple locations. In Sillod alone, four milk animals perished due to lightning, while two more animals were killed in Umapur village of Georai taluka in Beed district on the same evening.
Farmers' leader Jayaji Suryawanshi reported significant damage to harvested rabi crops, onion fields, and orchards due to the harsh weather. Although officials have not yet released an initial assessment, it is believed that crops from the extended rabi season and those grown during the summer have suffered extensively. This adds to previous losses, as Marathwada witnessed similar extreme weather in the third week of March, where lightning claimed two human lives and 40 milk animals, damaging over 11,000 hectares of agricultural land.
IMD Alerts and Additional Disruptions
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a five-day alert for several districts in the region. A yellow alert has been placed for Mumbai, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Beed, Latur, and Dharashiv districts, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, moderate rainfall, and wind speeds of 50-60 kmph at isolated locations. Meanwhile, Parbhani, Hingoli, and Nanded districts are under an orange alert, warning of more intense thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds, and hail at a few places.
In Latur district, strong winds in Kingaon village of Ahmedpur taluka and parts of Deoni taluka caused further disruption by blowing away tin sheds of kutcha houses, underscoring the widespread impact of the weather events.
