Three Tourists Killed, 17 Injured in Tragic Kullu Gorge Accident
A devastating road accident in the scenic Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh has resulted in the deaths of three tourists and left 17 others injured. The incident occurred on Saturday evening when a tempo traveller carrying 20 people plunged into a deep gorge near Sojha on the treacherous Banjar-Jalori Jot road.
Official Confirmation and Rescue Operations
Banjar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Pankaj Kumar confirmed the tragic news to media outlets, stating that three individuals had lost their lives in the accident. "So far, three people are reported dead and seven of the injured are being referred to the hospital. Rescue operation is on," Kumar said, highlighting the ongoing efforts to assist the victims.
According to Banjar Tehsildar Neeraj Sharma, the vehicle was carrying a total of 20 passengers when it fell into the gorge near Sojha, which is situated at an altitude of approximately 2,600 metres. The deceased included two female tourists and one male tourist, all visitors to the region.
Dangerous Road Conditions Blamed for the Tragedy
Police officers investigating the accident pointed to hazardous road conditions as the likely cause. Slippery surfaces due to recent rain and snowfall made travelling extremely perilous in the area. Higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh experienced significant snowfall on Saturday, creating treacherous driving conditions that contributed to this and other incidents.
The dangerous weather conditions caused widespread travel disruptions across the region. Hundreds of vehicles became stranded in the Atal Tunnel area on Saturday evening, forcing police to launch a separate rescue operation to safely guide vehicles back to Manali.
Broader Implications for Tourist Safety
This tragic accident underscores the serious risks associated with mountain travel during inclement weather conditions. The Banjar-Jalori Jot road, known for its challenging terrain and high altitude, requires extreme caution even under normal circumstances.
