Swine Flu Cases Emerge in Kolkata, Prompting Health Concerns
Kolkata is facing a potential swine flu outbreak, with several children testing positive for the H1N1 virus in recent days. Health authorities are on high alert as multiple private hospitals report cases, highlighting seasonal vulnerabilities and the need for preventive measures.
Confirmed Cases and Hospital Admissions
Two young boys, aged three and six, were admitted to Peerless Hospital on Thursday with severe symptoms, including high fever and convulsions, and subsequently tested positive for swine flu. A six-year-old girl also tested positive on Friday but was not hospitalized. Additionally, a five-year-old boy tested positive on Saturday, further indicating a spread of the virus.
According to Dr. Sanjukta De, head of the pediatrics department at Peerless Hospital, the children exhibited symptoms such as high fever and cough, with one case involving pneumonitis, though pneumonia was not present. She noted that another patient with H1N1 is being treated at home, emphasizing the contagious nature of the virus.
Widespread Symptoms and Hospital Responses
Multiple hospitals across Kolkata have reported an influx of patients with symptoms suggestive of swine flu. At a private hospital in south Kolkata, three patients were identified, with two in critical condition in the ICU and one receiving outpatient care. Dr. Soumya Sengupta, head of pulmonology at Charnock Hospital, mentioned that while no H1N1 cases have been confirmed there, many patients present with high fever, cough, and breathing distress, common to respiratory viruses like Influenza A.
Dr. De highlighted a surge in calls from concerned parents over the past four to five days, with many seeking H1N1 testing for their children. She attributed this to seasonal temperature fluctuations that typically trigger swine flu outbreaks and advised checking vaccination status as a preventive step.
Medical Advice and Prevention Strategies
Health experts are urging caution and early intervention. Dr. Sayan Chakrabarty, an infectious diseases physician at Manipal Hospital, recommended hospitalization for affected family members to ensure isolation and prevent transmission in close-contact settings like homes or workplaces.
Dr. MS Purkait, medical superintendent at Techno India DAMA Hospital, advised nasal or throat swab tests if symptoms persist for four to five days. Dr. Sarbajit Ray, a consultant physician at ILS Hospitals, emphasized rest, adequate hydration, and isolation for those experiencing fever, cough, sore throat, or breathing difficulty, along with seeking prompt medical advice.
