Kanpur's Scorching Heatwave Persists: Temperatures Soar Above 40°C for Third Day

The city of Kanpur continues to grapple with an unrelenting heatwave as temperatures remain above 40 degrees Celsius for the third consecutive day. While Tuesday saw a marginal dip, the relief was negligible, with residents describing the conditions as draining and exhausting.

Recorded Temperatures and 'Feels-Like' Heat

The Air Force Chakeri observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 41.8°C, while CSA University logged 40.1°C. Although these figures were slightly lower than Monday's readings, the 'feels-like' temperature hovered around a distressing 45°C, making outdoor activities particularly challenging.

For those venturing outside, especially around 4 pm, the heat felt unchanged from the previous day. Water bottles became essential, with stalls selling nimbu paani and sugarcane juice experiencing long queues as people sought relief from the dry, scorching air.

Disruption to Daily Life and Routines

The extreme weather has significantly disrupted daily routines across the city. Advocates, who typically leave court premises by 3 pm, are now staying back in their chambers until evening to avoid the peak heat.

Senior advocate Pramod Shankar Mishra, aged over 70, explained his strategy: "I prefer to leave after 5 pm when temperatures are slightly lower. It's simply too dangerous to be out during the afternoon hours."

Parents have raised concerns about school timings coinciding with peak heat hours. One parent urged authorities to end classes earlier to protect children from the harsh afternoon sun.

Traders are adapting their schedules, with many shifting to early morning hours. They now open shops at dawn and close by noon to avoid the worst of the heat, demonstrating how the community is adjusting to these challenging conditions.

Weather Conditions and Meteorological Forecast

The discomfort is exacerbated by specific weather patterns. Relative humidity dropped to 40%, making the heat feel sharper, while north-westerly winds at 7.9 kmph added to the dry, scorching conditions, according to meteorological reports.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a continued rise in temperatures across the Kanpur division, with bright sunshine and possible high-altitude cloud movement. Strong, hot winds resembling heatwave conditions are expected during the day.

Expert Warnings and Health Advisory

Weather expert S Sunil Pandey from CSA University provided a sobering outlook: "No significant relief is expected before April 24, and temperatures could climb up to 43°C."

He issued crucial health advice for residents:

  • Avoid outdoor activities during noon and afternoon hours
  • Stay well hydrated whether indoors or outside
  • Take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses

The persistent heatwave serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions, with Kanpur's residents continuing to adapt their lives around the scorching temperatures while awaiting relief.
