Jamshedpur Grapples with Sharp Rise in Fever and Throat Infections

Recent weather fluctuations in Jamshedpur have triggered a significant surge in cases of fever accompanied by cough and sore throat, according to local doctors. The Steel City is experiencing a health alert as hospitals report a sharp increase in patients suffering from these symptoms.

Hospital Admissions Spike by 30%

State-run Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) and Sadar Hospital have witnessed a 30% rise in patients with fever and throat infections over the past week. Over 200 patients aged between 12 and 65 years are arriving daily at the outpatient department of MGMMCH alone, highlighting the widespread nature of the outbreak.

Doctors Issue Health Warnings and Precautions

Dr. Sachin Seth from the medicine department at MGMMCH emphasized that the current season is conducive to viral growth, making children and senior citizens particularly vulnerable. He advised caution with air conditioning, noting that moving from hot outdoor conditions to a cold AC room can lead to illness. Avoid going inside an AC room after getting wet in the rain, he warned.

Doctors are urging parents to prevent children from consuming ice creams and cold drinks immediately after coming indoors and to prioritize hand hygiene to curb the spread of infections.

Risks of Self-Medication and Antibiotic Misuse

Dr. Seth strongly cautioned against self-medication, especially the use of antibiotics for fever and sore throat without proper diagnosis. Wrong and overuse of antibiotics must be avoided, as it can lead to drug resistance over time. Instead, he recommended herbal teas or soups for throat relief.

Private Clinics Report Similar Trends

Private clinics across Jamshedpur have also noted a 20-25% increase in fever and sore throat cases. Dr. Upali Sen highlighted the importance of vitamin C supplements to boost immunity in affected patients. He advised avoiding the sharing of food and personal items like towels and tumblers to reduce disease transmission among family and school contacts.

Weather Forecast and Health Implications

The Meteorological office predicts light to heavy showers in Jamshedpur and adjoining areas through Saturday evening, with night temperatures expected to drop to 20 degrees Celsius. This weather pattern is likely to exacerbate health issues, making preventive measures crucial for residents.

As the city braces for continued rainfall, health authorities stress the need for vigilance and proper medical consultation to manage the rising cases effectively.
