Indore Schools Advance Summer Break as Mercury Hits 42.2°C

The relentless heat in Indore reached a new peak on Saturday as the temperature soared to 42.2 degrees Celsius, the highest recorded this season. In response, the district education department declared a holiday for students up to class 8 from April 27 to 30, effectively advancing the summer vacations.

Students in classes 9 to 12, however, will continue to attend school during the cooler morning hours from 7:30 am to noon until April 30. After that, formal summer vacations will commence for all students, lasting until June 15, according to an order issued by district education officer Shanta Swami Bhargav.

The extreme heat has been particularly harsh on school-going children, many of whom endure long commutes and sweltering classrooms during peak afternoon conditions. The decision aims to protect young students from heat-related illnesses.

According to data from the Meteorological Department, Saturday's maximum temperature in Indore was 42.2°C, three degrees above the seasonal normal. The minimum temperature was recorded at 22.2°C. Relative humidity dropped sharply from 36 percent in the morning to just 22 percent by late afternoon, making the conditions feel even more oppressive than the actual temperature readings.

The India Meteorological Department's Bhopal office has placed Indore under a 'severe heat' category, with temperatures expected to remain in the 40–42°C range over the coming days. The health department has issued an advisory urging residents to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, stay hydrated, and wear light, loose clothing.

This early start to summer vacations is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and well-being of students amid the scorching heatwave.
