Hridayamrit Foundation Celebrates First Anniversary with National Mission Launch

In a significant milestone for public health in India, the Hridayamrit Foundation has completed its inaugural year, establishing itself as the nation's premier youth-led organization dedicated to cardiovascular health literacy and prevention. Founded by Dr. Amanpreet Singh Wasir, MBBS, the foundation is now poised to launch a flagship National Mission aimed at tackling the escalating burden of heart disease across the country.

Addressing India's Cardiovascular Crisis

Cardiovascular diseases represent a critical health challenge in India, accounting for approximately 28% of all deaths, with a disproportionate impact on younger demographics and underserved communities. South Asians face a genetically heightened risk, often developing heart conditions a decade earlier than global averages. Despite this, awareness remains critically low, with millions unaware of their blood pressure, blood sugar, or cholesterol levels. The Hridayamrit Foundation was conceived to bridge this gap, focusing on preventive cardiology and patient education tailored to the South Asian context.

Founder's Vision and Foundation's Growth

Dr. Wasir's inspiration stemmed from a personal experience in a busy clinic, where he realized the lack of accessible, culturally relevant health information for patients. Registered as a Section 8 not-for-profit in March 2025, the foundation's name derives from Sanskrit, symbolizing the heart and the nectar of knowledge. Unlike traditional cardiac care groups, Hridayamrit emphasizes youth leadership, mobilizing over 500 volunteers who have conducted more than 20 hybrid activities nationwide. Its Medical School Campus Ambassador program spans over 100 colleges, creating India's most extensive student-driven network in preventive cardiology.

Impact and Expansion in the First Year

Within just twelve months, the foundation has achieved remarkable outreach, screening and educating over 3,000 individuals through community-based initiatives. Operations now extend across more than 20 states and union territories, supported by over 20 cardiovascular advisors and 40 national and international partnerships. This rapid growth underscores the urgent need for preventive measures in a country grappling with a non-communicable disease epidemic.

National Mission: A Strategic Approach to Prevention

As it enters its second year, the Hridayamrit Foundation is launching its Flagship National Mission, a phased campaign designed to bring comprehensive cardiovascular prevention to every corner of India. Key components include:

  • Deployment of AI-augmented survey tools for risk assessment.
  • Training programs to build a preventive cardiology workforce.
  • Mass cardiometabolic screenings in diverse communities.
  • Culturally grounded health education materials, with plans for translation into regional languages.
  • Long-term follow-up systems to track behavioral changes and outcomes.

In collaboration with the South Asian Prevention Network Alliance of the American Society for Preventive Cardiology, the foundation is developing a specialized health literacy framework for South Asian populations, incorporating region-specific clinical thresholds and guidance.

Integrating Traditional Wisdom with Modern Science

Dr. Wasir, who is pursuing a Master of Public Health at Johns Hopkins and holds roles in international cardiology organizations, advocates for an integrated approach to heart health. He emphasizes the importance of blending modern medical insights with India's traditional practices like Yoga and Ayurveda, which have long promoted preventive and promotive health. "We believe that informed decisions save lives," says Dr. Wasir. "Every young person we train, every community we screen, every family we educate—that is one more heart saved. We invite everyone to join us in building a healthier India."

A Movement for Change in Healthcare

The first anniversary of the Hridayamrit Foundation marks not just a year of achievements but the beginning of a transformative movement. In a healthcare landscape often dominated by reactive treatments, this youth-led initiative champions a proactive paradigm where prevention takes precedence. By empowering young professionals and ensuring equitable access to life-saving knowledge, the foundation aims to reshape the narrative around cardiovascular health for future generations.
