HIV Remains Most Common STI in Karnataka

HIV continues to be the most prevalent sexually transmitted infection (STI) in Karnataka, with 417 new cases reported in the current year alone. This spike has prompted health authorities to intensify awareness programmes, particularly targeting college hostels and corporate offices, where the risk of transmission is considered high.

Rising Cases Prompt Action

According to data from the Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society, the number of new HIV infections has seen a notable increase compared to previous years. Health officials attribute this rise to a combination of factors, including lack of awareness, stigma around testing, and inconsistent use of preventive measures. In response, the state health department has launched targeted interventions in educational institutions and workplaces.

Awareness Drives in Colleges and Corporates

Special awareness sessions are being conducted in college hostels to educate young adults about safe sex practices and the importance of regular testing. Similarly, corporate offices are being engaged to provide information and resources to employees. These programmes include distribution of condoms, free testing camps, and counselling services. The goal is to reduce the transmission rate by promoting early detection and treatment.

Challenges in Combating HIV

Despite progress in treatment and prevention, stigma remains a major barrier. Many individuals avoid testing due to fear of discrimination, which leads to late diagnosis and further spread. Health experts emphasize the need for community-led efforts to normalize conversations around sexual health. The state is also working to expand access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for high-risk groups.

Call for Vigilance

Authorities urge the public to practice safe sex, get tested regularly, and seek immediate medical advice if exposed to risk. With sustained awareness and preventive measures, Karnataka aims to curb the upward trend in HIV cases and move toward the goal of ending the epidemic by 2030.
