This alarming situation was highlighted by Dr. Arun Kumar Shetty, the deputy director of animal husbandry and veterinary services, who emphasized the critical health and economic implications.
Heat Stress Impacts on Cattle and Chickens
Dr. Shetty explained that during the summer months, cattle experience a significant reduction in food intake due to heat stress. This decline directly leads to decreased milk yield and, in extreme cases, can even result in death from the intense heat. The situation is equally dire for meat chickens, which may drastically reduce their food consumption, causing insufficient weight gain. When temperatures soar above 36°C, these chickens face a heightened risk of mortality.

Animals and birds suffering from heat stress often have weakened immune systems, making them more susceptible to infectious diseases. Dr. Shetty warned that this vulnerability could translate into substantial economic losses for farmers and the broader agricultural sector.
