Heat Wave Engulfs Punjab and Haryana, IMD Issues Yellow Alert Till April 24
Heat wave conditions continued to sweep across Punjab and Haryana on Tuesday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for both states that will remain in effect until April 24. State governments have issued urgent warnings about significant heat-related health risks to the public.
Temperature Records and Weather Patterns
According to IMD criteria, heat wave conditions are officially declared when temperatures surpass 40°C in plains and register 4.5°C to 6.4°C above normal seasonal averages. In Haryana, Bopani in Faridabad district recorded the highest temperature at 42.9°C, while Bathinda in Punjab reached 41.6°C.
Adding to the discomfort, gusty winds with speeds up to 35 kilometers per hour were reported across various parts of both states, including Faridkot in Punjab and Hisar in Haryana.
Health Ministry Response and Precautions
Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh has issued a strong advisory urging vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly and children, to take immediate precautions against the extreme heat. "Heat exposure significantly increases the risk of heat stress, exhaustion, and potentially fatal heatstroke," the minister emphasized. "It can also aggravate pre-existing cardiovascular and respiratory conditions."
To combat the health emergency, the Punjab health department has activated dedicated heatstroke management units at multiple healthcare facilities:
- District hospitals across the state
- Sub-divisional hospitals
- Community health centers
These units are fully equipped with cooling measures, oral rehydration salts (ORS), and emergency medications. Additionally, ambulances have been specially prepared to provide pre-hospital cooling interventions during emergency responses.
Agricultural Impact During Wheat Procurement
The intense heat wave is creating particularly challenging conditions in grain markets throughout both states, where the annual wheat procurement season is currently underway. Farmers and agricultural laborers are forced to work outdoors for extended hours during peak heat periods, significantly increasing their risk of heat-related illnesses.
The combination of high temperatures and physical labor in open environments presents a dual challenge to both agricultural productivity and worker safety during this critical harvest period.
