GVMC Implements Comprehensive Summer Action Plan with Water Kiosks and Green Shelters
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has announced a robust summer action plan aimed at mitigating the severe impacts of rising temperatures across the city. As part of this initiative, the corporation will establish 198 Chalivendrams, which are specialized water kiosks, and 52 green shelters strategically distributed throughout its 10 administrative zones. This proactive measure is designed to provide essential relief to residents during the intense summer months, ensuring access to safe drinking water and other critical resources.
Essential Services and Public Health Initiatives
At these newly established Chalivendrams, the public will have access to free drinking water and Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) packets, which are vital for preventing dehydration and heat-related illnesses. In addition to municipal efforts, voluntary organizations are being actively encouraged to set up additional kiosks and distribute buttermilk, further expanding the reach of these cooling services. The GVMC is also focusing on public health education by launching awareness campaigns on heatstroke prevention and basic first aid techniques. These educational efforts are crucial for helping citizens avoid life-threatening situations that can arise from extreme heat exposure.
Official Statements and Strategic Guidelines
GVMC Additional Commissioner P Nallanayya emphasized that these actions are being implemented in strict accordance with the guidelines issued by the state disaster management authority. The primary goal is to enhance public awareness and promote precautionary measures to effectively tackle heatwaves. "With temperatures rising each year, it is imperative that vulnerable groups such as elderly persons, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions avoid unnecessary outdoor activities," stated Nallanayya. He further directed GVMC officials to intensify awareness drives across the city to ensure widespread adherence to these safety protocols.
Operational Adjustments and Worker Safety
As part of the summer action plan, significant operational adjustments have been made to protect municipal workers from the harsh heat. The duty timings for sanitation staff have been revised to cooler periods of the day: morning shifts now run from 5:30 am to 10:30 am, and evening shifts are scheduled from 3 pm to 6 pm. This revision aims to minimize heat exposure and reduce health risks for these essential workers. Additionally, zonal commissioners have received specific instructions to ensure that cool drinking water is readily available at construction sites for laborers, who are particularly susceptible to heat stress.
Community Involvement and Environmental Considerations
The GVMC is also fostering community involvement by encouraging residents to place water bowls for birds and animals, promoting compassion and care for all living beings during the scorching summer. Under the formal heatwave action plan, a dedicated committee has been formed with the GVMC commissioner serving as chairman and the additional commissioner for public health acting as secretary. Other key officials will serve as committee members to oversee the implementation and coordination of all relief measures.
Resource Management and Future Preparedness
GVMC Chief Medical Officer Dr. ENV Naresh Kumar highlighted that ORS packets will be supplied to voluntary organizations operating the Chalivendrams, ensuring a consistent supply of essential health resources. UCD Project Director BV Ramana urged these organizations to also focus on creating awareness about preventing the wastage of drinking water, emphasizing conservation during the dry season. Water Supply Wing Superintending Engineer Ch Yedukondalu provided reassurance regarding water availability, noting that reservoirs currently hold sufficient supplies to last until July. He confirmed that more than 100 litres of drinking water per household is being supplied, underscoring the corporation's commitment to meeting the city's water needs throughout the summer.
