Major Food Adulteration Crackdown in Gujarat Districts

In a significant operation targeting food safety violations, authorities in Gujarat have launched a major crackdown on the manufacturing and distribution of spurious milk across three districts. The coordinated effort has resulted in substantial seizures of adulterated materials and equipment used in the production of counterfeit dairy products.

Gir Somnath SOG Busts Spurious Milk Operation

The Gir Somnath Special Operations Group (SOG) executed a decisive raid on Monday, uncovering an extensive operation dedicated to producing fake milk. The team targeted the residence of Ravi Karmata located in a village within the Talala forest area, leading to the confiscation of critical evidence.

During the raid, officials seized:

  • 3,120 litres of suspected spurious milk
  • 20 kilograms of palm oil
  • 105 kilograms of suspected adulterated milk powder
  • Various manufacturing equipment

The total estimated value of the seized materials and equipment amounts to approximately Rs 4.68 lakh, highlighting the scale of this illicit operation.

Supply Chain Investigation and Additional Seizures

Following interrogation, Ravi Karmata disclosed that he sourced his raw materials from Sanjay Kirana Store in the Tekri area of Talala. Acting swiftly on this information, the SOG team conducted a subsequent raid on the store, where they discovered and confiscated a suspicious batch of raw materials.

This secondary seizure included milk powder valued at Rs 92,900, further disrupting the supply chain of adulterated products. The investigation continues to trace the origins and distribution networks of these hazardous materials.

Common Adulterants and Health Risks Identified

Gir Somnath SOG in-charge PI D M Kagda provided crucial insights into the methods used by these illicit operations. He explained that ingredients such as palm oil and specific powders, including Roquette Glucidex maltodextrin, are commonly employed in the manufacturing of spurious milk to mimic the texture and appearance of genuine dairy products.

Food safety officers have collected samples of both the seized 'milk' and the raw materials, sending them for comprehensive laboratory testing. The exact chemical composition and specific adulterants will be confirmed once the analytical reports are received.

Officials have issued serious warnings about the health consequences of consuming such adulterated products. The consumption of spurious milk can lead to multiple health issues, including severe stomach pain, chronic acidity, and persistent gas problems. In more dangerous cases, hazardous substances such as urea are reportedly added to the mixture, which can cause devastating kidney damage and serious heart ailments over time.

Broader Crackdown Across Multiple Districts

This operation forms part of a larger initiative targeting food adulteration in the Junagadh, Gir Somnath, and Porbandar districts of Gujarat. Authorities are intensifying their efforts to combat the widespread problem of counterfeit food products that endanger public health and undermine consumer trust.

The successful bust demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated law enforcement actions against food safety violations. As testing continues and further investigations unfold, officials anticipate additional raids and seizures to completely dismantle these dangerous networks operating within the region.
