Major Health Crisis in Goa as Suspected Water Contamination Sickens 149 Residents
Vasco: A severe diarrhoea outbreak has struck the Prabhu Violetta residential complex in Dabolim, with over 149 occupants across five buildings falling violently ill, triggering widespread panic and raising urgent concerns about public health safety in the region.
Suspected Borewell Contamination Linked to Sewage Leak
Villagers from Chicalim strongly suspect that the diarrhoea epidemic has been caused by contaminated water supply originating from the complex's borewells. Preliminary investigations indicate that sewage release from the residential complex's waste treatment plant may have polluted the underground water table, leading to this dangerous health situation.
Health officer at Cortalim primary health centre, Dr Tejan Lotlikar, confirmed that water contamination due to sewage at the building complex is a likely cause. "We will know better once we receive lab reports," Lotlikar stated, emphasizing the need for thorough scientific analysis to determine the exact source of contamination.
Government Response Criticized as Inadequate
Cyril Fernandes of the Catholic Association of Goa revealed that residents received no immediate assistance when families first approached government agencies and local representatives for help. Despite inspections conducted by Mormugao deputy collector, doctors from Cortalim health centre, Vasco police, and other officials who visited the complex and issued notices, the critical sewage leak problem remains completely unresolved.
"The Catholic Association of Goa stands in full solidarity with this residential community and condemns government's callous attitude," Fernandes declared. "We demand immediate intervention by chief minister Pramod Sawant to deliver emergency medical aid, provide safe drinking water, and fix sanitation problems on a priority basis."
Community Outrage Grows Over Health Neglect
The situation has exposed serious gaps in public health infrastructure and emergency response mechanisms. Fernandes emphasized that the trust between residents and authorities has been "completely shattered" due to the delayed and insufficient response to this health emergency.
As families continue to suffer from severe gastrointestinal distress, community leaders are calling for comprehensive action including immediate medical assistance, provision of safe drinking water alternatives, and permanent resolution of the sanitation issues that have potentially contaminated the area's water sources.
