Gaya's Blood Warriors: A Trio's Lifesaving Mission Inspires Community
In the districts of Gaya and Aurangabad, three individuals—Niraj Kumar, Balbir Chandrawanshi, and Navin—stand united by a profound commitment to saving lives, despite having different blood groups. Navin possesses a 'B positive' blood type, while Balbir Chandrawanshi and Navin are 'O negative' and 'O positive', respectively. Their shared passion transcends these biological differences, driving them to donate blood to strangers of diverse religions, castes, and regions, embodying the spirit of humanity.
Niraj Kumar: A Journey Fueled by Personal Loss
Niraj Kumar, a 34-year-old resident of Sagahi Khap village in the Sherghati block, has made an extraordinary impact through blood donation. With the average human body containing approximately five litres of blood, Niraj has already donated an impressive 18.5 litres over 57 donations. His journey began 14 years ago, sparked by the tragic death of his sister due to blood loss, which awakened his inner Good Samaritan. Since then, he has donated blood in various cities, including Delhi, Kolkata, Ranchi, Jamshedpur, and Dhanbad, showcasing his dedication beyond local boundaries.
Niraj's ambition is to donate blood 151 times in his lifetime, with his next scheduled donation set for April 20. Beyond personal contributions, he actively organises camps to raise awareness and debunk myths that donating blood weakens the donor's body. In recognition of his efforts, former President Ramnath Kovind honoured him with the Good Samaritan Award from Gaya. Additionally, Niraj has pledged his body to a Patna-based organisation focused on facilitating organ transplants, further extending his legacy of giving.
Inspiring Friends to Join the Cause
Not content with his own achievements, Niraj persuaded his friends Balbir Chandrawanshi and Navin Kumar to embrace blood donation. Initially reluctant, both have since become enthusiastic donors. Balbir Chandrawanshi made his first donation in 2018 and has since contributed blood 23 times, with plans to continue. Navin Singh joined the group during the Coronavirus pandemic to save a friend's life, and he has donated blood 13 times so far.
Forming the 'Raktveers' Group
Together, this trio has established a cohesive group of blood warriors, known as 'raktveers', under the banner of 'Shaheed Bhagat Singh Raktdan'. This organisation regularly conducts blood donation camps and makes deposits in various blood banks, amplifying their lifesaving impact. Their efforts have attracted a fourth member, Pravesh Kumar, an ex-Army man from Dariyapur village, who has donated blood 17 times since joining post-retirement.
Key Achievements:
- Niraj Kumar: 57 donations, 18.5 litres, Good Samaritan Award recipient.
- Balbir Chandrawanshi: 23 donations and counting.
- Navin Singh: 13 donations, initiated during the pandemic.
- Pravesh Kumar: 17 donations as an ex-Army volunteer.
This collective effort highlights how individual passion can evolve into a community-driven movement, saving countless lives and fostering a culture of altruism in the region.
