Tragic Drowning Incidents Claim Five Lives in Gujarat Within 24 Hours
In a heartbreaking series of events, five individuals, including three children and two women, lost their lives in two separate drowning incidents across Gujarat's Banaskantha and Amreli districts over a 24-hour period ending Friday evening. These tragedies have cast a somber shadow over the communities involved, underscoring the critical importance of water safety measures.
Banaskantha: Three Cousins Drown in Lake While Fetching Water
The first incident occurred in Dodgam village, located in the Tharad taluka of Banaskantha district, on Thursday. Three cousins—a young boy and two sisters—drowned in a lake while attempting to collect water. According to police reports, the boy, identified as Vipul, accidentally slipped and fell into the water while drawing from the lake.
Witnessing his struggle, his cousins, Hetal (22) and Gudi (18), who were sisters, immediately jumped into the lake in a desperate attempt to rescue him. Tragically, none of the three individuals knew how to swim, leading to all of them drowning in the water.
Hetal and Gudi had traveled to Dodgam with their mother, Resham Valmiki, to visit their maternal uncle, Soba, who is Vipul's father. Hetal was married to a man from Balodan village in Bhabhar taluka and is survived by her two young children: a three-year-old son and a two-year-old daughter. The sisters had previously experienced the loss of their father approximately three years ago, adding to the family's grief.
Amreli: Two Young Brothers Drown in River While Playing
In a separate and equally devastating incident, two young boys from the same family drowned in a river in Bhundani village, situated in the Khambha taluka of Amreli district. The boys were playing near the water's edge when one of them accidentally slipped, leading to both being swept away.
Local residents quickly alerted the 108 emergency ambulance service, and the boys were rushed to the government hospital in Rajula. Despite these efforts, doctors declared them dead upon arrival, confirming the tragic outcome.
The deceased were identified as Rudra Mahida, aged 10, and his brother Parth Mahida, aged 8. Their untimely deaths have left the community in mourning, highlighting the dangers that water bodies can pose, especially to children during recreational activities.
Community Response and Safety Implications
These incidents have sparked discussions about water safety awareness and the need for preventive measures in rural and semi-urban areas. The rapid response from residents in Amreli, who contacted emergency services, demonstrates community vigilance, yet the outcomes underscore the limitations when accidents occur in water.
Authorities are urging families and communities to prioritize swimming education and implement safety protocols near lakes, rivers, and other water sources. The tragedies serve as a stark reminder of the risks associated with water activities, particularly for those who are not proficient swimmers.
As investigations continue, the focus remains on supporting the bereaved families and promoting initiatives to prevent similar incidents in the future. The loss of these five lives in such a short span has deeply affected the regions, calling for increased attention to water hazard management and public safety campaigns.
