Ludhiana Consumer Commission Imposes Rs 25,000 Cost on Fast Food Chain

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Ludhiana has imposed a composite cost of Rs 25,000 on a global fast-food chain and its local franchise for allegedly selling a hazardous product worth Rs 256 to a customer. The complainant, Amarjot Singh of Miller Ganj, claimed that he suffered severe health issues after consuming the food purchased from the franchise on November 11, 2023.

According to the complaint, Singh purchased food items for Rs 256, and the employee assured him that the food was fresh. After consuming the takeaway order, his health deteriorated immediately. He consulted Dr. Harsh Ketan Sharma at Ayali Khurd, Ludhiana, who diagnosed it as a case of food poisoning. Singh was bedridden for seven days.

Singh served a legal notice on March 15, 2024. In response, the opposite parties filed a written statement claiming that on that date, they sold approximately 215 food items and received no complaints. However, the commission, after reviewing the evidence, found that the product liability action initiated by the complainant was sustainable. The commission observed that it would be just and appropriate to award compensation of Rs 25,000 to the complainant.
